In this problem we are given “log base 1.02” and asked to use the change of base formula to solve for n. The change of base formula looks like this: Without getting lost in the details, you’ll want to remember this: loga x = logb x where b is your choice. logb a You will almost always want to choose b = 10 or b = e because these are the functions you already have on your calculator. In how many years will the investment double? In part (a) we found that it would take 35 quarters for the investment to double.
